Asia Pacific Security Forums
AAI participates in a number of events dealing with security in the Pacific Rim. In July 2005, Director Al Santoli offered testimony at a U.S.-China Commission hearing on China's Growing Global Influence. The hearing examined China's growing influence and activity around the world, its energy policy, and its direct and indirect effects on U.S. interests. Click here to view the full transcript of Al Santoli's statement at the hearing.
The former Asia Pacific Initiative (now Asia America Initiative) hosted a number of security forums in 2002 and 2003. The forums touched on security issues as diverse as the US and Indian Partnership against Terror to an Insider’s View on North Korea. Al Santoli organized working groups and panel discussions which drew upon a long roster of participating experts from the following countries:
Canada | Japan | North Korea | Philippines | India| Taiwan | US Government & National Security

Taiwan Government Officials
The AAI hosted a Forum on Taiwan for Washington-based China experts on September 15, 2005, at the Institute of World Politics. Guest speaker, the Hon. David Lee, Representative [Ambassador] of Taiwan to the United States and Director of the Taipei TECRO [Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, spoke on the subject, "The Future of Cross Strait Relations." The presentation, which focused on the significance of a democratic Taiwan, was followed by a frank and lively discussion in closed session.
Ambassador Lee was accompanied by his senior Economic, Political and Security officials. The discussion addressed the historic role of Taiwan as the first independent democratic society in ethnic Chinese culture, and the threat to its survival. The threat has escalated with the shifting balance of military forces in the region as the People's Republic of China continues an unprecedented tactical and strategic military buildup while conducting a growing international economic and political offensive. The group discussed the transfer of Taiwan's electronic manufacturing industry to China and its related impact on the native Taiwanese work force and potential impact on coming elections. Also discussed was the "United Front" strategy that Beijing is using to play off Taiwan political parties and personalities against each other on August 30, 2005.
