Justine: Lyon, France -- AAI Intern Winter 2008
I was glad to work for the AAI. It is a great organization with a coherent and humble project to build peace one child at a time. I really appreciate this approach. You are not “bringing peace” but you are “building” peace by involving communities and empowering youth. This is the key for sustainable development and peace in those regions toughly touched by war and corruption
I learned, in world affairs, to look at the local, first and then go to the national and the international. It is essential to talk to people, to understand who they consider to be their natural leader, what they need, what they can do together to improve their situation. It is not enough raising money and do punctual actions in poor countries. You can bring joy for few minutes, the illusion of a better world, but what’s next? It is much more useful to provide communities education, a sense of responsibilities with the implementation for instance of training programs, health prevention…
We speak here of development, which implies a long-term vision. In the era of globalization, it is hard to make people understand that this long-range approach is essential. Indeed, with the new communications media that allows the World to be connected and the globalization of finance, we want immediate results. That is why it is important to deliver your message of development, “building hope one child at a time”. It clearly means that you are not going to bring peace instantaneously, but that by empowering youth and give them a chance to express their talent, you give peace a chance to emerge in those countries at war.
