Programs in Asia, Centered in the Philippines

AAI supports patients in Manila, with 49 of our first 50 patients now cancer free.  We have added the Philippine Society for Orphan [rare] Disorders (PSOD) in Manila to help doctors provide life saving medicines and nutrition for women and children with cancer and for children with rare genetic diseases. This program includes monthly nutritional support, art supplies, story books, and toys to strengthen their healing process and instill positive attitudes, love, and care for these children.

The combination of ethnic conflicts and natural disasters have intensified the suffering of millions of Filipino people, especially children. This program empowers elementary schools as centers of community unity and progress in regions where children are victims of intense poverty and armed conflict. We have distributed over 150,000 math and science textbooks, reading and literacy textbooks, and fiction and non-fiction library books for pre-Kindergarten and Elementary, Middle and High School, and College students. Our gardening and fisheries support programs have expanded entrepreneurial training for women and youth. Full community involvement teaches students the essential skills of literacy, craftsmanship, gardening, clean water/hygiene, and healthy cooking needed for holistic economic progress and peace.

There are still some 3 million people in the Philippines devastated by the cataclysmic Super-Typhoon Haiyan [locally named Yolanda]. AAI partners with local and international groups, supporting the reconstruction of homes and schools, creating clean water systems, and providing food and safe water to thousands of students and their families. AAI school lunch programs facilitate mothers using local produce to cook daily lunches in schools to overcome malnutrition. We purchase bulk supplies in local markets along with hygiene products, medicines, and other life-saving materials.
